Turning Problogger Poll Into Real Numbers
Many people may have seen the Problogger Poll How Much Did You Earn From Blogging in October Poll but these numbers don’t really mean anything. I turn the poll results into real numbers for all blogs making money in the United States of America for you below:
1. 48 blogs make over $15,000 a month each and every month
2. 36 blogs make $10,000 to $15000 a month each and every month
3. 60 blogs make between $5000 and $10000 a month each and every month
4. 216 blogs make between $1000 and $5000 a month each and every month
5. 192 blogs make $500 to $900 a month each and every month
6. 108 blogs make $100-$500 a month each and every month
7. 516 blogs make less than $100 a month each and every month but more than $0 a month.
8. The rest of the 12 million blogs in the United States of America make $0 a month or are too inconsistent in monthly earnings
Here is how I came up with the numbers:
• 43% off all bloggers that voted on the Problogger.net web site make under $100 a month
• 9% make between $100 and $500 a month (big gap)
• 16% make between $500 and $900 a month
• 18% make between $1000 and $5000 a month (again big gap)
• 5% make between $5000 and $10000 a month
• 3% make $10,000 to $15000 a month
• 4% make over $15,000 a month
Now what does this tell us? First of all many people will brag or lie about their income so let us drop off the 4% of people that make over $15,000 a month as an outlier or margin of error or whatever (even though I am sure there are plenty of people that do this). Now lets say most of the 18% claiming $1000-$5000 make closer to the $1000 a month.
This tells us an incredible 86% of people make under $1200 a month
Since this poll was conducted on a blog that is largely for professional bloggers the poll is really more for this question:
How much do highly sophisticated or full time Bloggers earn a month?
And the answer would be 86% make under $1200 a month
99.999% of the 12 million blogs in the United States make a big fat $0.00. That would mean that only 12,000 blogs in the United States make income. Of that number only 10% probably apply to the Problogger poll. That’s 1,200 making significant income. Let’s use the above percentages and apply this number of blogs.
1. 48 blogs make over $15,000 a month each and every month
2. 36 blogs make $10,000 to $15000 a month each and every month
3. 60 blogs make between $5000 and $10000 a month each and every month
4. 216 blogs make between $1000 and $5000 a month each and every month
5. 192 blogs make $500 to $900 a month each and every month
6. 108 blogs make $100-$500 a month each and every month
7. 516 blogs make less than $100 a month each and every month but more than $0 a month.
8. The rest of the 12 million blogs in the United States of America make $0 a month or are too inconsistent in monthly earnings
